Air untainted by death fell sweet over Taniel. He sucked in a gasping breath. His chest felt bonelessly light, no longer crushed beneath the oppressive hostilities of Tahir’s and Minu’s sorcery. He winced, gripping his head whirling from the dizziness of waking too quickly. His vision cleared to show grey sky through the black branches above him. He blinked in aching confusion. He had no memory of how he ended up beneath the dogwood tree, safely beyond the range of Tahir’s wards that refused to tolerate Minu’s ill-magic coursing through him. Last he remembered, he was lying in the manor’s ruined hallway.

Someone must have carried him out, but there was no sign of another soul. No figure stood on the walkway, lurked behind the trees or watched from the manor’s front doors left hanging open. A cold, pattering rain darkened the stone path, and set the leaves above him to shiver. He lay alone beneath the dogwood outside the boundary of the manor grounds and there he remained, unable to stand on watery legs, curled beneath his cloak sheltering him from the rain, until half an hour later when in disregard of all advice and wisdom, Shirin came looking for him.
